Purpose
- The NRP Provider course is an international curriculum that lays
the foundation of knowledge and skills so that health professionals
can build increasing resuscitation proficiency.
- The NRP is endorsed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada
and the Canadian Paediatric Society.
- Completion of the NRP does not imply that an individual has the competence
to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for
determining the level of competence and qualifications required for
individual to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.
- The APHP does not offer provider courses. Each Health Region and individual hospitals have NRP instructors
who offer NRP provider courses. If you are unable to find a NRP provider
course in your area, please contact the APHP office.
Content
- The NRP Provider course includes studying the Textbook for Neonatal
Resuscitation (5th Edition) and the Canadian Addendum, completing a written evaluation, completing
individual performance skill checklists and completing megacodes
checklists.
- The Canadian Addendum is available at (http://www.cps.ca/English/ProEdu/NRP/Recommendations.htm).
- NRP course is eligible for MAINPRO-C credits (the College of Family Physician) and Maintenance of Certification Section 1 credits (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada). Course participants can claim 8 credits for full course and 4 credits for renewal course.
Length
- The NRP Provider course is most often one day in length. Participants
are expected to study the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation prior
to attending a course.
- The Textbook for Neonatal Resuscitation (5th Edition) and Canadian Addendum can be purchased

Availability
- Physicians, registered midwives, registered nurse, licensed practical
nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists are eligible to attend
a NRP Provider Level course.
- Health professionals
who successfully complete the NRP Provider course will be registered
with the Canadian Paediatric Society for a 2-year period.
Registration with CPS provides the registrant with formal recognition
from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada of successful completion
of an NRP Provider Course and provides reciprocity with in North America. Health
professionals will be required to complete a provider renewal course
every 2 years to maintain their active registration.
