Education & Consultation: Neonatal Resuscitation Program Provider Course

Purpose

  • The NRP Provider course is an international curriculum that lays the foundation of knowledge and skills so that health professionals can build increasing resuscitation proficiency.
  • The NRP is endorsed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society.
  • Completion of the NRP does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for individual to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.
  • The APHP does not offer provider courses. Each Health Region and individual hospitals have NRP instructors who offer NRP provider courses. If you are unable to find a NRP provider course in your area, please contact the APHP office.

Content

  • The NRP Provider course includes studying the Textbook for Neonatal Resuscitation (5th Edition) and the Canadian Addendum, completing a written evaluation, completing individual performance skill checklists and completing megacodes checklists.
  • The Canadian Addendum is available at (http://www.cps.ca/English/ProEdu/NRP/Recommendations.htm).
  • NRP course is eligible for MAINPRO-C credits (the College of Family Physician) and Maintenance of Certification Section 1 credits (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada). Course participants can claim 8 credits for full course and 4 credits for renewal course.

  • The NRP Provider course is most often one day in length. Participants are expected to study the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation prior to attending a course.
