Education and Consultation: Overview

The Alberta Perinatal Health Program (APHP) Education and Consultation core business function is to: Provide learning opportunities and resources for health professionals, health regions, Alberta Health and Wellness, and other stakeholders to achieve optimal perinatal practice.

Goals

To contribute to:

  • Increased health professional knowledge and skills in target topic areas
  • Increased capacity of health professionals to provide optimal perinatal care.
  • A reduction in infant mortality and morbidity.
  • The management of obstetrical risk.
  • The quality of care provided to women pre-conceptually.
  • The quality of care provided in the first year of life.

In order to provide education and consultation strategies that are of value to health professionals and health regions in Alberta, the Education and Consultation function will adhere to the Quality Dimensions and Definitions of Health Service Delivery from the Health Quality Council of Alberta.

  • Acceptable – education strategies provided are respectful and responsive to user needs, preferences and expectations.
  • Appropriate – education strategies are relevant to user needs and are based on accepted or evidence- based practice.
  • Accessible – education strategies are provided in the most suitable setting in a reasonable distance and time.
  • Effective – educations strategies are provided based on scientific knowledge to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Efficient – education strategies are optimally used in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Safety – education strategies provided will be aimed at mitigating risks to avoid unintended or harmful results.

The APHP delivers continuing perinatal education and consultation to the broad audience of Alberta health professionals in the following topic areas:
