Quality and Innovation Function

The Alberta Perinatal Health Program Quality and Innovation core business function is to: Enhance the capacity of Alberta Health Services, health professionals, Alberta Health and Wellness and other stakeholders to achieve optimal perinatal practice.

Activities

Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement

The study of perinatal mortality and morbidity is conducted by the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) Committee on Reproductive Care as a quality assurance activity, as defined in the Section 9 of the Alberta Evidence Act- “a planned or systematic activity the purpose of which is to study, assess or evaluate the provision of health services with a view to the continual improvement of the quality of health care or health services, or the level of skill, knowledge and competence of health service providers”  The Minister of Health pursuant to Ministerial Order “22/2001 designated this Committee as a Quality Assurance Committee. 

Outcomes of the study include:

  • The identification of preventable factors and system issues
  • Identified gaps in knowledge and practice
  • Recommendations to providers and Alberta Health Services
  • Collection, analysis and reporting of aggregate data on perinatal and maternal mortality

Review, revise and/or develop perinatal forms and audit tools to support/promote optimal practice
